They serve a variety of functions and, beyond the firefighters themselves, are the key factor to any successful operation. It’s no surprise then that our apparatus are highly expensive and technical pieces of machinery and, as such, require constant maintenance and upkeep to ensure that they can perform how we—and the members of the community—expect them to perform. This is what makes the preventive maintenance so important. The one crucial thing about preventive maintenance is that it will most likely reduce or eliminate the need for expensive corrective maintenance in the future.

Understanding the idea

When talking about preventive maintenance, we must first understand what that term means. According to the NFPA 1911: Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus, preventive maintenance is the “systematic inspection, detection, correction, and prevention of incipient failures, before they become actual or major failures.” Read more: Apparatus Supplement: Preventive Maintenance [post_title] => Apparatus Supplement: Preventive Maintenance [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => apparatus-supplement-preventive-maintenance [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2016-07-11 04:05:55 [post_modified_gmt] => 2016-07-11 04:05:55 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://www.mooreindhardware.com/?p=3057 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 72 [filter] => raw ) [2] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 3054 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2016-07-14 08:57:49 [post_date_gmt] => 2016-07-14 08:57:49 [post_content] => The Rapid City Fire Department put a new addition into service Tuesday. It's a new wildland fire apparatus that came just in time for Wildfire Preparedness Month. The engine will operate out of Fire Station 5 on Park Drive. The fire department said the engine greatly improves the station's initial attack capabilities. Lieutenant Josh Lange explained why the apparatus is such a great addition. "It feels like you get a say in what you are getting. So especially if I didn't know if it was coming to my station or not but just having some input in how it's built and designed, you know a little more firefighter friendly." The Rapid City Fire Department said the truck perfectly outlines with their mission to "Prepare, Prevent, Protect." By custom, housing ceremonies involve firefighters pushing the truck into the station for the first time. However, that tradition has become mostly ceremonial because modern fire engines are too heavy to be pushed, Aetna spokesman John H. Farrell IV said. After enjoying a barbecue dinner at Station 7 on Thorn Lane on May 6, Aetna members placed their hands on the front of Quint 7 as driver Gene Niland backed the 28-ton truck into the station. The new truck is known as a “quint,” a name derived from its five functions: pump, water tank, fire hose, aerial ladder and ground ladders. It will give Aetna more flexibility when responding to fire calls, Chief Drew Bowerson said. “With the number of volunteer firefighters who respond to alarms on the decline, Aetna needs apparatus that can function in multiple roles to best serve the community,” Bowerson said. “The new quint enables Aetna firefighters to fill whatever roles may be needed on the fire ground.” Read more: New ‘quint’ fire truck provides Aetna flexibility [post_title] => New ‘quint’ fire truck provides Aetna flexibility [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => open [ping_status] => open [post_password] => [post_name] => new-quint-fire-truck-provides-aetna-flexibility [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2016-07-11 03:57:33 [post_modified_gmt] => 2016-07-11 03:57:33 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => http://www.mooreindhardware.com/?p=3051 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 18 [filter] => raw ) [4] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 3048 [post_author] => 1 [post_date] => 2016-07-09 08:48:39 [post_date_gmt] => 2016-07-09 08:48:39 [post_content] => D'IBERVILLE was able to buy two new fire pumpers this year, thanks in part to revenue generated by the new Scarlet Pearl Casino, and on Thursday Chief Gerald Smith donated one of the trucks being replaced to the Diamondhead Fire Department. "We've had it since it was new," Smith told Diamondhead Fire Chief Jerry Dubuisson as he presented him with the 1998 custom pumper outside the D'Iberville Fire Station. "It's been a good truck," Smith said, adding he doesn't know how many miles it's logged because the digital odometer doesn't always work. "You know this is 'as is,'" Smith joked. Dubuisson said he is excited to get the pumper. "This gives us a truck 25 years newer than our reserve truck," he said. When the reserve truck goes down for service or maintenance, Diamondhead has had to borrow a truck from other cities for its 15-person, two station department. Dubuisson said residents wondered why a truck with a Long Beach logo was responding to an accident in Diamondhead. Representatives of Spartan Emergency Response, a South Dakota business unit of Spartan Motors that manufactured the truck, drove it out to Indianapolis and back, performed work on the truck and then delivered it to Surf City. “We are very excited to have taken delivery of the new truck,” said Fire Chief Mike Wolfschmidt. “It turned out better than we had envisioned. When we stand back and look at the truck, it’s a great feeling of pride and accomplishment. I encourage all the residents and visitors of our community to stop by the firehouse, take a look at the truck, ask questions and celebrate its homecoming.” Although the new truck arrived at the station prior to the fire department’s participation in the Beach Haven Volunteer Fire Co.’s triple housing last weekend, it was not entered into the parade because it is still not ready for use, said Peter Hartney, president of the fire company. There is a lot of knowledge, skill and hustle that must be employed to establish a water supply, supply the attack lines or appliances and carry out support tasks identified by the MPO's own observations such as scene lighting, pulling additional hand lines or raising ground ladders. Recently, I connected with a fellow firefighter on LinkedIn who listed his job as fire control engineer. Thinking this was perhaps a new term for firefighter in his department, I asked him what his job description entailed. He replied that his primary responsibilities were for driving and operating the engine that he was assigned to. In the common fire service vernacular, he was a motor pump operator. I like the term fire control engineer. For me, it more accurately describes the technical and mechanical nature of the job. Call it what you will, it is a tough job with little margin for error. Here are the five most common mistake MPOs make and how to set them right. It's not just an operational proficiency question, but a fiscal policy and marketing question. Can you and your people explain in plain English why the community has or needs a piece of aerial apparatus? The cost for an aerial apparatus — ladder, elevating platform, ladder platform, etc. — ranges from $750,000 to over $1 million depending upon type and model. Such a price tag gets local government officials and their constituents questioning such an expense despite the benefit to the community. This can be especially true in suburban communities where few, if any, tall buildings exist. Whether the discussion regards a first-time purchase or a replacement, the first question those outside the fire service ask is typically: Why is it needed when there are no tall buildings or high-rises? And the follow up question is, How often is it being used? For non-fire service folks — especially those paying the bills — these seem like reasonable questions. There's never been a higher degree of scrutiny for fire department operations than there is today. Forget watchdog journalists; everyone with a smartphone and an Instagram or Twitter account is a journalist. So it's extremely important that every member of your fire department understands the general public's perspective and limited knowledge of fire service operations. The seven engines and three ladder trucks would take a year to design and construct, and would also carry a “bumper-to-bumper” eight-year warranty. The Pierce brand fire trucks the OFD is seeking would be manufactured in Appleton, Wis., Boyd said. But a design meeting that would iron out the seating arrangements, or configuration, of the fire truck’s cab would have to take place, and the first such meeting is slated late in the summer. Ordering the new trucks is part of a plan that had been in place for almost 10 years, Boyd said.
